Nuk - Congo African Grey Parrot

Nuk - Congo African Grey Parrot

I'm Nuk. I was mom's first African Grey Parrot. I came to live here in October 2000. Mom didn't know any better and she fell in love with me at PetSmart. She came to visit me for weeks before she drove our dad crazy. Finally one Sunday evening before the store closed he said, "I can't take this anymore, please go over and get that bird". So within an hour I was home with my new mom and dad. Mom got me home, put me in my cage and we looked at each other. Mom thought, "Oh, what have I done? I don't know what to do with him." We went to the vet for a check up and I was fine. The the fun started. I learned to step up and how to talk. Then when I was about a year and a half old I started biting. And I do mean biting. Mom called the vet and they suggested Michelle Karras from The Polite Parrot. She is a Avian Behavior Consultant. Mom was scared to tell dad that she was calling a "bird shrink" to come out and work with us. Well on the day that Michelle came dad found out and of course his reaction was just with mom thought. "A Bird Shrink!, what are you nuts?" Well, Michelle came and showed mom all the things that she was doing wrong with me. Basically just letting me get the upper hand. Rats, now the news was out and I've got to mind my mom. Mom and Aunt Michelle hit it off and have been great friends ever since.

I'm the king around here. I'm the largest of all the African Greys in our flock. I weigh in at about 475 grams. I'm also the biggest chicken. I'm scared of all the other greys. I run and call for mom or dad when they come near my cage. I love to be held and snuggled with. My best friends are Auntie Michelle's first boy, Buzz. He is even bigger then me by at least 100 grams and my girlfriend Hanna. We play on our Java Tree that Auntie Carrie bought us for Christmas.
